The Role of Occupational Therapy in School Settings: Unlocking Potential in the Classroom

Hello, wonderful families and educators!

As an occupational therapist specializing in pediatrics, I have the incredible opportunity to work in school settings, helping children unlock their potential and thrive academically and socially. Today, I want to share with you how OT makes a difference in schools, along with a few personal stories that highlight our role in this vibrant environment.

What Does an Occupational Therapist Do in Schools?

Occupational therapy in schools focuses on supporting students in their ability to participate in academic tasks and daily school activities. This includes everything from fine motor skills and sensory processing to social interactions and self-regulation. The goal is to enable each child to succeed in the classroom and feel confident in their abilities!

A Day in the Life of a School-Based OT

Let me take you into my world for a moment. One memorable day, I worked with a bright and curious 7-year-old named Leo, who was struggling to stay focused during class. His teachers had noticed that he often fidgeted in his seat and had difficulty completing assignments, which impacted his confidence.

During our first session, I conducted an assessment to better understand Leo's needs. I quickly learned that he had sensory processing challenges that made it hard for him to filter out distractions. To support him, we introduced a few sensory strategies in the classroom.

We collaborated with Leo’s teacher to create a “sensory toolbox.” This included items like fidget spinners, stress balls, and noise-canceling headphones. The idea was to give Leo tools he could use to self-regulate when he felt overwhelmed. As soon as he began using these tools, I could see a shift in his focus and engagement!

Building Skills for Success

Beyond sensory strategies, OT also plays a crucial role in developing fine motor skills. One of my favorite memories involves working with a 5th grader named Mia, who had difficulty with handwriting. Together, we created a fun writing station that incorporated different textures and activities to strengthen her hand muscles.

We used squishy stress balls to warm up her fingers and practiced tracing letters in sand. We even had “writing races” where Mia competed against herself to improve her speed and accuracy. By turning practice into a game, Mia's confidence soared, and she became excited to show off her beautiful handwriting!

Social Skills and Peer Interaction

OT in schools isn’t just about academics; it also focuses on fostering social skills. I remember working with a shy boy named Ethan, who struggled to make friends during recess. We organized a small group activity that involved building a giant LEGO tower together. This allowed Ethan to work alongside his peers, promoting teamwork and communication.

Through this activity, I provided guidance on initiating conversations and sharing ideas. It was heartwarming to see Ethan’s smile as he proudly contributed to the tower, and by the end of recess, he had formed new friendships. These moments are what make my work so rewarding!

The Impact on Families and Educators

Occupational therapy in schools is a collaborative effort. I work closely with teachers, parents, and other specialists to create individualized support plans for each student. When we team up, we can share strategies that empower children not only in school but also at home.

For instance, after working with Leo, I connected with his parents to provide tips on how to set up a sensory-friendly homework space at home. By working together, we were able to help Leo thrive in all areas of his life.
